Walzwerk

381 S Van Ness Ave
(between 14th St & 15th St)
San Francisco, CA 94103

Occasion: Belated bday dinner with two of my favorites Anita and Susan 3.22.10

Complimentary appetizer
Not exactly sure what it is, but it was weird. It's like a wheat crouton slathered with cheese with a pickle slice of cheese or salami topped with a cherry tomato. It wasn't great, but it was free. It didn't help ease the hunger at all.

Small Potato Pancakes
with Chive Sour Cream and Applesauce
These were so good. I tried it with both the sour cream and applesauce. Sorry I did not enjoy it as much with the applesauce. I thought the sourcream went well with it, but having it plain was the best. We each had a piece and it left me wanting more.
Sauerbraten
Marinated Beef with Potato Dumplings and Braised Red Cabbage
The meat was tender, juicy and full of flavor. Definitely a delight. As for the red cabbage, sorry I'm just not a fan. It had a tart tangy flavor to it. As for the potato dumplings, they reminded me of big rice balls with a mochi like texture. It was different, but it lacked in flavor. Maybe I should have eaten it with the flavorful beef.

Schnitzel (Breaded Porkloin) with Mashed Potatoes & Seasonal Vegetables
Loved the mashed potatoes. As for the breaded porkloin I didn't see anything too special about it. Reminded me of Japanese Katsu. Portions were very big though.

Garlic Roast Pork with Potatoes and Vegetables
This was my favorite of the three dishes. Meat was soaked with flavor, very tender and very juicy. The garlic flavor was subtle but definitely made it that much more enjoyable. Potatoes were filling.
Apple Strudel with Ciao Bella Vanilla Ice Cream
Anita was really craving an apple strudel. Maybe I've never really had one before, but I thought it was a similar version of an apple pie. To our surprise there were dried fruits and nuts in it as well. I'm not sure if I like it that much with the dried fruits and nuts. The puff pastry was delicious though. Ice cream went well with the warm puff pastry skin.
