Los Hermanos Mexican Food

2026 Chestnut Street
(between Fillmore St & Mallorca Way)
San Francisco, CA 94123

Occasion: Taco Mondays! haha!

Fish Taco
topped with diced tomatoes, cilantro, onions
It wasn't great, but it was ok. Portion size was big, but it didn't wow me at all.

Carne Asada Taco
Lack of flavor and the meat was dry. Definitely did not satisfy or fulfill.

Dinner for 3

Rich's Place

Occasion: Felt like eating in and cooking!

Sauteed Prawns
battered with egg and flour
Love how seafood has its own natural sweetness. We dipped it into a sweet plum chili sauce that we had gotten at the farmer's market that morning. The sauce was good, but a bit spicy.
Seared Dayboat scallops
I love scallops. We just seasoned it with salt and pepper and seared it. Very easy to make and it turned out pretty good too!! YUM

Veggie Samosas
We bought it from the farmer's market at the ferry building that morning and decided to have it for dinner. Dipped it in a cilantro chutney sauce. All we had to do was pop it into the toaster oven.

Bread with a balsamic vinaigrette dipping sauce
We got the vinaigrette at the farmer's market!! We were so sold on the samples that we had to get a bottle!! Absolutely delicious!

Tuna tartar
My verision of tuna tartar, I took the recipe that my coworker used and just added diced avocados to it. Ahi tuna, cilantro, green onions, capers, avocado, lime juice[a l ot of it] salt and pepper. Goes perfectly well with chips. yay. success. So successful, we made it for the superbowl party the next day!

Bacon Wrapped Hot Dogs

In the Mission district
23rd and Mission

Occasion: After the farmer's market and brunch at Mama's... We went grocery shopping in the mission and ran into the bacon wrapped hot dog cart! We just had to get it and try it out!

Bacon Wrapped Hot Dogs
First time having this bad boy when sober. Let me just warn you, they don't taste as good when you're sober. It tastes so much better after a night of drinking. BIG EAT SF 2009& 2010: #92. Bacon-wrapped hot dog from a cart in the Mission

Mama's

1701 Stockton St
San Francisco, CA 94133

Occasion: Saturday brunch!!

Monte Cristo
Breast of Turkey, Baked Ham, Cheddar and Havarti Cheese Bread dipped in Egg and grilled, served with Homemade Jam
We yelped it before going and this was one of the most popular and yelped about dish. It definitely lived up to the hype. It was french toast filled with turkey, ham and melted cheese. Sounds weird, but it was sooooo good. I like french toast and never thought to combine it with turkey, ham and cheese. We tried to eat it in many different ways. First we tried it with the homemade strawberry jam, which was good, but not really with the sandwich. The jam tasted fresh and home made. I would have much preferred the jam with an english muffin. We also tried to drizzle syrup on the monte cristo, which turned out to be really good. When I think of french toast I think of syrup. But syrup with turkey, ham and cheese too? DO IT!!! It sounds off, but it was delicious. Have a little bit of sweet with the savory. I highly recommend this!

Mama's French Toast Sampler
with a glass of fresh squeezed Orange Juice
I love french toast. Or should I say the classic french toast. Here at Mama's its good, but it didn't wow me that much. Maybe I just don't like the three different kinds of house made bread they used. The first one i tried was a cranberry, orange and walnut bread. It was ok. I didn't like how the dried cranberries and orange bits made it so tart. When I think of french toast, I think a mouth full of delicious sweetness and cinnamon, not tart and tangy flavors. Then there was the cinnamon bread, which was delicious!! Just what I had imagined the french toast to taste like. The third slice of bread was a banana walnut bread. It was ok, but again, not the flavor I wanted for my french toast. Next time I go, I'm going to order the swedish cinnamon or even the chocolate cinnamon.
The fresh squeezed orange juice was sooooo good and so sweet! Loved it and the pulp in it. Reminds me of home squeezed orange juice.

Won Mi Korean BBQ

1545 Fillmore St
San Francisco, CA 94115

Occasion: Friday night dinner!

Korean pancake
Always one of my favorite korean dishes. I enjoyed it a lot. I liked the thickness of the dough, but it lacked in ingredients. I wish it had more squid and meat in it. It wasn't the best, but it wasn't too bad either. It was the best dish we ordered that night.
Korean Short Rib Soup
Never had Kalbi Soup before. I didn't get to try the meat, but the soup broth was pretty good. It's simple. It was just soup with kalbi, eggs and onions.

Korean Short Ribs
Some pieces were really dry and Flavor wasn't all there. It was not the best kalbi I've had and I will not go back there for it again.

Miette

1 Ferry Building
San Francisco, CA 94111

Occasion: Saturday farmer's market outing.

Macroons
Pistachio, hazelnut and vanilla
In the order starting from my favorite. They are absolute treats. It looks like a crunchy little cookie, but no. When you bite into it, it's actually got a soft marshmellow like texture. It kind of sinks into your teeth as you bite into it. The flavors are amazing. Don't let this little cookie fool you, it's got a ton of flavor in just one bite. These are great little treats to have. I am absolutely a fan. My sister thinks its a bit too sweet compared to the macroons she's had in France. No way. I am a fan of Miette's macroons. YUMMAY!

Carrot Cake
Love it. It's not too sweet, cake was moist and the frosting is delicious. SOOOO GOOOOD!

Blue Bottle Coffee

1 Ferry Building
San Francisco, CA 94111

Occasion: Saturday farmer's market outing.

people waiting in line for their coffees. It was a crazy long line!

The guy who prepared my coffee with a supposedly top notch machine.

Single Latte
I've always heard good things about blue bottle coffee, so I decided to wait in line with all the coffee drinkers and give it a try. I'm not a coffee drinker and I don't need it everyday. I probably don't know how to decipher between the different kinds of coffee, but one thing I knew for sure was that this was good coffee. It didn't taste like all the other coffees I've had. Some I had tasted were more watered down, others were overly bitter. The foam was perfect and the coffee was smooth, good, delicious. Don't really remember if it kept me awake, not that I needed the coffee that morning. It was very beautifully prepared, which made it much more enjoyable. I'd definitely drink this coffee again.

Diana's Place

Occasion: Diana's mom cooked bun rieu for me. Perfect for a rainy Wednesday night dinner.

Bun Rieu
I first had this dish when I went to Diana's house freshmen year of high school. She would talk about it this particular dish and emphasized how it was her favorite vietnamese dish. When I first tried it, I fell in love with it. I wondered why it wasn't introduced to me earlier. I learned that not a lot of restaurants serve this particular dish because it takes a lot of time to prepare. Ever since I've had my first bowl of bun rieu, it became my favorite vietnamese dish too. And no matter how many different restaurants I try it at. It doesn't beat a home cooked bowl from diana's mom or dad. Restaurants are usually lacking something, either ingredients or the taste. I love how diana's mom's broth is very flavorful. Love the chunks of tomatoes as well as the generous amount of the shrimp paste meat thingy. Overall, the best bun rieu I've ever had.

Anderson Bakery

1737 Post Street
San Francisco, CA 94115

Occasion: My coworker Jenn's Bday! Great excuse to have cake at the office =D

Dream Cake
Until this day, the only dream cake I have ever tried was the one from Ambrosia Bakery, which I like a lot. The one from Anderson's wasn't bad either. Cake was not as moist, but still very good. I usually don't like that much whipped cream between the layers of cakes because it's too much for me, so I just scooped the extra whipped cream on the side. My coworker's family liked it so much, they went to Anderson's to purchase a cake for their next birthday celebration.

What it looks like from the insides.

Custom Burger

121 7th St
San Francisco, CA 94102

Occasion: Grabbing a quick dinner before watching WICKED! Supposedly, this was on the travel channel.

Half regular fries and Half sweet potatoe fries
The sweet potato fries were awesome and overpowered the regular cut fries. I usually like fresh cut fries. It's good to have a taste of both!

Kobe Beef Burger
with mushrooms, bleu cheese and avocado
I honestly would not have been able to decipher between kobe beef and angus beef because it tasted like angus beef to me. Loved the bleu cheese crumbles. It was better than an In and Out burger but it just tasted ok to me. Did not stand out much. Just the way you order is different.
It came with a pickle

AJ's Place

Occasion: Tuesday night March Bday planning! Planning= not too successful, but filling our stomachs was extremely successful!

Tuna Tartar
with scallions, cilantro, chipotle, capers and lime juice
I first tried this when AJ made it at our girls holiday kris kringle potluck get together. This time, I got to see how she prepared it. I even helped cut the scallions and the cilantro. Went well with the big tortilla chip like things she had. I had to try to keep away from the chipotle because it was sooo spicy. Next time without the chipotle please=]
Lettuce with feta cheese
This is just half of the dish. It was used to make an eggplant salad. Drizzle some olive oil and top it off with pan fried eggplants and it is absolutely DELICIOUS!!!

Pan Fried Japanese Eggplants
Sliced and fried the eggplants with olive oil. Easy and cooks pretty fast. It has its own natural sweetness. Eat it with romaine lettuce and feta cheese and it's absolutely amazing.

Sauteed prawns
Sauteed with some oil and salt and pepper. For me I dipped it with soysauce, for AJ and Zoe they dipped it into this really spicy sauce. I love prawns and its natural sweetness. DELICIOUS.

Foreign Cinema

2534 Mission St
San Francisco, CA 94110

Occasion: Dine about town!

Smoked Salmon
with chick pea hummus, radishes, shaved fennel, creme fraiche, Turkish pepper
It was really thinly sliced, which I like. The chickpea hummus was full of flavor and went perfectly with the smoked salmon. We cut pieces of the smoked salmon and placed it on top of the complimentary bread they provided. On top of the salmon we added the chickpea hummus, which was absolutely delish. It's a must get appetizer that will not fail to please your taste buds. YUM!

Natural beef carpaccio
with mache, farm egg, fried capers, waffled potatoes
Another great appetizer that we ordered! Love it when its thinly sliced. One of my favorite places that I've had carpaccio. The meat itself was full of flavor, not like a lot of the other places where I've had it. In Vietnamese restaurants I'm used to the sweet flavor of the fish sauce drenched in lemon juice and onions and cilantro. Beef carpaccio at Italian restaurants are a bit too tangy in flavor for me. It lacks flavor. But I love it here!! Maybe its the waffled potatoes that add flavors to the carpaccio or the flavor of the farm egg. It was absolutely delicious.

Pan-fried Pacific true cod
with fingerling potatoes, Napa cabbage slaw, sauce gribiche
This was offered on the dine about town menu that night. Delicious. Although I'm not a big fan of pan fried fish, this was very tasty. The skin was fried to the perfect golden brown. The fingerling potatoes lacked a little bit in flavor, but I still enjoyed it. I love starchy foods and I love potatoes. I wish there were more pieces served. Not too big of a fan of the cabbage slaw.

Madras curry fried chicken
with apple chickory greens, Capay farms sweet potato mash
While we were waiting to be seated, I could have sworn that almost every table had a serving of this dish. It looked really appetizing and we decided to get one to try. It's not just regular fried chicken, it was curry fried chicken. It was so different and so good. I also loved the sweet potato mash.

Rose Creme Brulee
I loved that it was a rose flavor. It made the dessert taste more refreshing. Definitely something different and it makes the dessert taste less rich. Worth giving a try. We enjoyed the dessert.

My Canh

626 Broadway(at Grant Ave)
San Francisco, CA 94133

Occasion: Late night munchies!

Egg Rolls
Tasted good late at night. Anything fried tastes good late at night.

Beef Carpaccio
I love it best from vietnamese restaurants. Although it's not the best, it definitely satisfied my late night craving for it. I love it when they put a lot of cilantro and onions. YUM

Bun Rieu
Edible, but horrible. The soup base did not taste like tomato at all. It was definitely lacking in all ingredients that would be needed to make an authentic bowl of bun rieu. Granted it was 2am, but still, you should have all your ingredients in stock...unless...this is how they make it. Not good enough for me.

Chouchou

400 Dewey Blvd
San Francisco, CA 94116

Occasion: Dine about town with the girls!

Frisee Salad
AMAZING! Loved the pancetta bits in the salad. The poached egg was perfect. Love the blend of flavors in the salad. The waiter highly recommended it and I'm glad I got it.
Mussels
The bowl was huge!! The flavor of the mussel was nothing that I've tasted before. It was cooked in white wine which definitely added a kick to it. One of my friends said, "These are the best mussels I've ever had." This dish was the most worth it and stood out the most out of all our dishes that night.

Salmon
with tuna tartar and a bit of fettucine
The piece of salmon was very small and dry. There were barely a handful of tuna tartar, which only tasted mediocre. Fettucine was also just a handful and tasted very bland. This dish did not impress me at all.
Filet Mignon
with spinach and a ball of fried risotto and goat cheese
The portion of meat was very little. Seemed like a 4oz piece of meat, but we were informed that it would be a 10oz-11oz of meat. The sweet sauce went well with the meat. Spinach was drenched in the sauce, making it a bit too sweet. The fried ball was different. Definitely not something I'm used to. Love the rich taste of goat cheese that went well with the risotto. Overall the dish was just ok.
My medium rare filet and the fried ball of surprise

Strawberry Bruscetta with mint coulis and vanilla ice cream
It was a very refreshing dessert. Fruits and ice cream. It was good, nothing spectacular, but it still pleased the taste buds.

Pear Tart
Delicious. I didn't think I'd like it, but the crust was delicious! Tasted really fresh and its so worth getting.
