Red's Crawfish

611 Larkin Street
San Francisco, CA 94109

Occasion: Dinner date with Diana. End of February 2011.  Overdue dinner and catch up.

Garlic bread
Simple fillers. Not garlicy enough, but was nice to eat some warm buttery bread to fill our starving stomachs.
Sweet Potatoe Fries
Love sweet potato fries so we had to add that into our order.  Not the best I've had, but I couldn't complain! Great to snack on while waiting for food.

Shrimp and corn
I love ordering shrimp. 1 pound of shrimp did my stomach good.  It's no boiling crab, but it still fulfilled my seafood craving.  Corn was cooked and soaked in the broth, which made it extra spicy for me. yikes.
 Garlic Noodles
I love love love garlic noodles. The more garlic the better.
 Crawfish
It sure did fulfil my stomach, but not spicy enough for Diana. She loves Boiling Crab kind of spice!
Fried banana and ice cream

Michael Mina

252 California Street
San Francisco, CA 94111

Occasion: Henry's 25th Bday dinner. 2.26.11.  Superb service considering we had about a party of 15.  Since the birthday boy wanted to try the tasting menu...everyone in the party had to get it as well.

Parsnip soup with grilled cheese and prosciutto sandwich
Delicious. Such a great appetite opener (does that make any sense?) It's a phrase we use in Chinese and I translated it literally. Anyhow, the soup was delicious. It looks creamy, but it wasn't.  I had a bite of the grilled cheese and it was so flavorful.  I also dipped it in the soup and took a bite.  The sandwich was good by itself and dipped into the soup. How could something so simple taste so good?
Tuna Tartare
with ancho chile, sesame oil, pine nuts, mint
Tuna tartare is one of my favorite appetizers to order.  They did us right here.  We were presented by this plate which displayed all the ingredients that will be mixed together in our tuna tartar.
Then...

they do this whole performance in front of you. They mix all the ingredients together. It was so good. I loved how we each got our own individual portions because I devoured everything! Pinenuts in tuna tartare= awesome..love the texture and the taste!
Complimentary bread with ricotta and honey
Best free bed ever! The bread was so buttery and the ricotta cheese combined with honey...was to die for!! It's so simple, but so good.  It was so addicting, we loaded up on this crack. YUM!

Bacon wrapped dungeness crab with gnocchi in a citrus vinaigrette
Another wonderful dish. The gnocchi was so good.  The waiters self served us again and topped our dishes with chunks of crab meat.  I asked for more crab meat and my wish came true.  Usually places skimp you on crab chunks, but not here, not that day and not with me. I was very satisfied.
Fish Duo
Crusted cod and pan seared red snapper with taro chips in a coconut sauce and a lobster vinaigrette
We got to enjoy fish prepared in two ways. They were both good, but I was surprised to find myself enjoying the crusted cod more than the pan seared red snapper.  I am not usually a big fan of fried fish. I love my fish simply steamed or seared. However, the meat of the cod was so much more tender and it melted in my mouth. Another great dish!
The preparation of our next dish...
Pork short rib on top of a green polenta with a cauliflower something on the side
My favorite part wasn't the short rib, it was the green polenta.  It had the consistency of hummus/ mashed potatoes and it was just so flavorful. You're supposed to eat it with the short rib, but I ate it alone.
Beef two ways: filet mignon & braised beef with finely chopped mushrooms with brussel sprouts
By the time this dish came out I was stuffed, but I was determined to fit it into my stomach.  I liked the filet better than the braised beef, though the braised was still very tender.  It's hard to make judgement on this dish especially when you're so full already.
Candied Apple
candied apple with frozen Greek yogurt and mulled cider foam.
I've never really been a big fan of apple desserts, so I can't really judge this dessert.  From what I can remember, it wasn't too bad.
Wafers with jasmine, chocolate honey flavored filling
This was a light delicious little dessert.  The wafer cookies weren't too crumbly and  was light in not only the flavor but also a light crispy texture.  These were some addictive little suckers!
Passionfruit and Grapefruit Panna Cotta
My favorite dessert of the night.  I loved the tropical sweet flavor of the passionfruit, which made it a very refreshing dessert.  I can't stop thinking about how good it was.  It almost reminded me of a passiofruit mousse. Chunks of grapefruit complimented the the passionfruit flor ver well. I am so a fan!!

That takes the cake

2271 Union Street
San Francisco, CA 94123

Occasion: Birthday dessert after dinner at La Folie. 02.22.11

From left to right; top to bottom
Snickerdoodle: Vanilla and cinnamon cupcake
Cherry Blossom: Green tea cupcake with lychee frosting
Gentlemen Prefer Red: Their redvelvet cupcake with cream cheese frosting
Prom Queen: Strawberry cupcake with strawberry frosting

My favorite was the snickerdoodle. The cupcake was moist and fluffy and I just love the taste of cinnamon and vanilla. Second favorite was the Cherry blossom.  Green tea flavor was not completely there.  The flavor was quite mild, which complimented well with the lychee frosting, which over powered the taste of the green tea.  I really liked that.  Sounds weird, but wait til your taste buds meet those flavors. YUM!  Then goes the red velvet, which I wasn't too fond of.  The cupcake was a bit on the dry side, but the cream cheese was good!  Prom queen...I love the idea of it..strawberry everything, but it was just a bit too sweet for my liking.  As I get older, I think my taste buds are becoming more sensitive to taste.

La Folie

2316 Polk Street
San Francisco, CA 94109

Occasion: Henry's Bday Dinner! 02.22.11.  Our most favorite fine dining restaurant out of all the birthday dinners/fine dining within the two weeks! We each ordered the four course meal and shared everything! It was so filling, we barely touched our last course!

** 1 Michelin Star **

Red Wine
Because we're getting old. Can't be downing those shots anymore! Like wine...we get better with age. =P
Amouse Bouche
Ahi tuna tartare with some creamy sauce. AMAZING! I could not wait to taste the rest of the things. This first appetizer took us away!
Amuse Bouche
Poached egg in an egg shell with a crispy potato chip on top and brioche bread to dip into the egg shell filled with some kind of soup. Another appetizer that upped our experience another notch. Very cute presentation.
Seared Hudson Valley Foie Gras
with poached spiced apple in a sweet/ tangy apple cinnamon sauce
Biggest piece of foie gras I have ever been served.  I was a bit hesitant in ordering this because it is usually really rich in flavor.  I've eaten it by complementing it with a piece of steak, but I was convinced to order it through recommendations of a friend and fellow yelpers.  So glad I tried it.  It wasn't as rich as I'd thought it would be and in fact the spiced apple complemented the foie gras really well. We both enjoyed this appetizer a lot!
Frog Legs "Bernard Loiseau"
with garlic puree and parsley coulis
Another delicious dish.  I've never had fried frog legs, so why not.  We were not disappointed. Tender meat and delicious sauces that went well with it. I've only had frog legs prepared by my parents at home and at Chinese restaurants, I was excited to see how the French would prepare it.  Also, I think the middle block of white stuff was a bone marrow mousse. Very interesting!
Warm Pig Feet
Sweetbread and Lobster Terrine, on a Lentil Salad with Bacon and Hazelnut Vinaigrette
I couldn't tell I was eating pig's feet, which I guess you can say it was a good thing. It was wrapped in a crispy skin, which was really fun to eat.  Lentil salad was simple, but very very good to me. The textures of the variety of things included in the dish were very fun to eat.  It was very interesting and I've never had anything like that before.
Lobster and Mushroom Risotto
Amazing with huge chunks of lobster. It was delicious and made perfect to my liking.
Butter Poached Lobster
served with English Pea Ravioli with Truffle Beurre Fondue, and Marcona Almond Salad
So good it melts in your mouth! The taste of the truffle on the ravioli was absolutely memorable.  Chunks of lobster were generous and though there was only one ravioli,  it was wonderfully prepared. Loved it!
Liberty Farm Duck Breast, Smoked Duck Tongue and Duck Confit
Duck prepared in 3 ways, that was pretty exciting.  We only got a taste of each because by the time the last two dishes came out, we were STUFFED!! Duck breast was absolutely tender and it was topped with mushrooms of some sort.  Duck tongue meat was so tender and it went really well with the sweet tangy cranberry like sauce on the side.  Duck confit...OMGGGGGG...mouth watering good! Nothing about this dish disappointed us.
Rôti of Quail and Squab, stuffed with Mushrooms, Wrapped in Crispy Potato Strings, Truffled Jus
Another AMAZING dish. By this time we were both very very very stuffed so we only had a little bit of it.  Presentation was amazing! There was what seemed to be a quail egg cooked over easy in a potato chip of some sort. Quail was stuffed with mushroom and wrapped in crunchy fried potato strings. Squab was amazing as well with tender and not over cooked meat. Very well prepared dish!
Palate Cleanser
Complimentary before we start our dessert. Cool and tangy!

Spring Strawberries and Valrhona Chocolate Bread Pudding, Basil-Olive Oil Ice Cream, Champagne Sabayon
We decided to try bread pudding to compare it to Chaya's.  Chaya's won.  It was good, but not as good as Chayas.
Complimentary dessert
We were barely able to eat this, but everything was good! Brownie was a little bit too rich. Caneles were delcious, as were the madelines.  The jelly cubes were mediocre at best.  I liked how they were small and bite sized.

Brenda's French Soul Food

652 Polk Street
San Francisco, CA 94102

Occasion: Brunch on President's day weekend.

 Crawfish Beignets
These things never disappoint me.  They're best eaten when its warm and fresh.  So flavorful and so delicious. Fluffy bread, filled with chunky crawfish.
Watermelon Iced Tea
Unlimited refills. So refreshing and so good.  Perfect on a hot summer day.

Sweet potato pancakes with pecan syrup
It was a special of the day.  I got this instead of the french toast.  The syrup never fails, but can get very rich.  As for me I balanced it out with some grits. Pancakes were nice and fluffy!
Shrimp grits
The few times that I've eaten here, I've seen numerous tables with this order.  It's never really appealed to me, but I really wanted to give it a try. I am so glad I did because it is absolutely delicious.  It can look like baby food, but do not let your eyes fool you.  Let your taste buds be the judge of this dish.  Give it a try and I assure you, you will leave this place with no regrets.

Loved the fatty goodness of bone marrow.Nom nom nom!

It was ok.  I'm not a big bacon person.  I didn't think it was anything spectacular, but the meat was cooked to my liking. Fries= addicting. Aioli sauce= bomb!

Tikka Masala

98 Judah Street
San Francisco, CA 94122

Occasion: Spending valentines day with my BF.  No one else will eat Indian food with her, so I decided to sacrifice for her on singles awareness day.  Ella was so happy that we got to eat Indian! Two girls and too much food! I just wanted to try everything!

Mango Lassi
Good, but not as good and memorable as the one from Amber.
Thanks for introducing me to this deliciousness BF <3

Baigan Bharta
Roasted mashed eggplant with garden fresh eggplant cooked with slender bits of onions and tomatoes.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE the smokey taste of eggplants.  It was goooooooood!
Chicken Tikka Masala
One of my first few times having it.  It was pretty flavorful and good, but it was very heavy and did not settle too well in my stomach.  I loved the aroma of this dish.

Sushi Bistro

431 Balboa Street
San Francisco, CA 94118

Occasion: Family dinner. February 2011.  Of course I would forget my camera....ended up using my camera phone.

Butterfish Blasters
snow crab meat and avocado wrapped in butterfish torched with a garlic soy
One of my favorite things to order here.  Love the buttery sweet taste of the torched butterfish
on the left:
Hawaiian Breeze
with mango, avocado and fuji apple topped with tuna, macadamia nuts and drizzled with cilantra pesto
One of my favorite rolls there. Love the combination of the sweet, tart and savoriness. YUM!

Volcano roll
Baked salmon with spicy aoli, crabmeat and avocado
Definitely my least favorite roll. The sauce was just too rich for my liking.
